Prey - mini-review

For those who are wondering, Prey was initially discussed by 3D Realms at Electronic shows as a developing project around 1996/1997, but then it was put on hold. Finally 3D Realms hired Human Head to develop the game in 2001. And for those of you who do not recall who 3D Realms is, they are the makers of Duke Nukem series. (Insert Duke Nukem Forever joke here)
Well, the game has taken 5 years to complete, but it's finally here! Was the wait worth it?
In one word, my answer would be "AbsolutlyFrickenWithouttaDoubtYES!"
Prey falls into the First Person Shooter category. And places most of the game inside a "space ship" in low Earth orbit. The first 5 levels of the game are in the Demo exactly as the appear in the full game. So I'm not letting loose any secret or spoilers here.
Pro's of the game are:
- Best story EVER inside a FPS (IMHO)
- Vehicles
- Imaginative level design that truly used 3D (You'll walk on walls, ceiling, etc...)
- Living organic weapons
- Your characters speaks through out the game (A la Duke Nukem style)
- Doom 3 engine looks really good
- "Death Walk" replaces dieing and keeps the story telling of the game moving forward
- "Spirit Walk" add's a new twist to solving puzzles
Con's:
- A little on the short side at 6 - 8 hours
- Rated 'M'
I would recomend that any gamer try the demo. It's 450 MB at Prey's website: http://www.prey.com/
Played the demo? Have the game? Your thoughts?
