KD - Hawaii tips?

Post by warf »

I think I remember you saying you lived in Hawaii???

We are headed there for vacation in June.

Maui, and Big Island.

Any tips, secrets or must sees?

I lived on Kauai actually, but I have spent some time in Maui.
Never been to the big island though. It's on my list!

On Maui, I'd definately suggest you put a day aside to do the drive to Hana. If you like snorkeling, try to make it out to Molokini, the water out there is unbelievably clear! I've snorkeled off of Lanai, but it wasn't much better than just picking a spot off of Maui and doing it there.

If you're staying in some type of place with a kitchen, swing by Costco when you get there (if you have a membership)... you'll save a ton doing that rather than shopping at the local markets near the hotels. There's also a k-mart (or wal-mart I forget) right next to costco which is really close to the airport.
Don't forget to stock up on sunscreen, you don't want to spend your whole trip with a wicked sunburn. The sun there in June is rather unforgiving...

Try to find yourself a Maui Taco one day for a snack, they're pretty good. Or if you want a really nice dinner and don't mind spending a good penny for it, go to Roy's in Kahana.

If you like to take pictures, like I do, there's a (F, I can't remember the name of it...) a place on the way to Hana with all kinds of plants and trees in there, it's good for a walk if it's not raining... You can't really miss it since it's right on the road and theres usually a few cars parked there.
Also, when you're on that road, you'll see alot of waterfalls. Some word of the wise would be to not stop in the middle of the road to take a picture of it. The locals hate tourists slowing them down on that road, so if you get anyone behind you that isn't in an obvious rental car and is hauling ass, I'd let them pass you when you get a chance.

For shopping, I'd suggest taking a walk through Lahaina, there's alot of neat shops in there, and there's also a Hard Rock cafe in the midst of it all.

That's about all I can think of for now, but if you have any other questions let me know.
There are also a few books that you can find on places to go while you're there. Alot of bookstores tend to carry them...

oh yeah, forgot to mention...
Try to get up really early one morning and head up to the peak of Mt Haleakala to watch the sun rise. It rises right over the volcanic crater and is quite a spectacle. Bring a camera and something warm in case those trade winds chill you that early in the morning.

Cool, thanks for the info!

We have haleakala, and Hana on the schedule.

We are going to go past hana and all the way arouind. Looks like the road gets a little rough, but not too bad.

How in the world did you find work in HI? That must have been tough!

I'd suggest that if you plan on going around, that you rent a Jeep.
Most rental companies won't cover you in a sedan on that road.

For work I just applied at all the hotels for whatever positions they had open. I wasn't doing the computer thing at the time, so I ended up doing a graveyard shift as a janitor at the Princeville Hotel. It didn't pay well and I could just barely live off of it, but it sure was nice getting off of work at 5:30 and being able to hit the surf before anyone else was out.
