Post by Rooster »

Hello, just wondering if you guys still have a Q1 server running? i havent played for quite q few years and got board with CS & CS Source. BTW is your source server down as well?

if you have a Q1 server i cant seem to find it nor can i remember "HOW" to get on a server.i used to use gamespy but i just cant seem to figure it out. nice seeing you all again and hopefully we can frag some Q1 since i never see anyone on the CS-S server except the Bots.

Good question!!
I thought Neo was still hosting a server at quake.sctf.net, not certain if that's still going though.
We also had another running on our main server (the same IP address as our CS-S server), however I haven't played in so long that I actually forget where that server is on the net.
I'm willing to bet that it's still running however.

FYI, you can also get Q1 through Steam now and find servers that way.
If you know the address of the server though, you can press "~" to pull down the console and type "connect server.address.com" to connect to the server.

Not too many quake 1 servers out there. I still play, at quake.shmack.net

You'll need to download the proquake client.

Lotsa proxy bots out there, but its still kinda fun.

Rooster, I took the quake.sctf.net server down due to lack of activity. I'll run it again for a while, and see what happens. This server is in So. Cal. so your ping times may vary the further away you are. With ProQuake, use the Tab key to check your ping time. Under 150ms should be playable enough. But ideally you want a double digit ping time (sub 90ms is good).

(Anyone know of a good way to run Quake as a Windows Service?)

ProQuake is here: http://proquake.planetquake.gamespy.com/
Download: glpro350.zip

Unzip that file and put the contents into your C:\Quake folder. (Or what ever the path is to your Quake install.)

I'll be adding the server back to my Quake server page (see the SCTF link in my sig below) so that it can be checked for player on-line status.

Dave, I know how to add a Non-Steam game so that I can start Quake (GL Pro) from Steam, but I can't figure out how to find the Quake Servers through Steam. I'm lacking the options for Quake 1 in the list, and I can't add a favorite server at the address. Any clues? Or did they update this out of the latest client?

Yeah, cause there is no such thing as too many "Your mom" jokes

Good hearing from you Mr. Rooster, and glad you are still playing the
great old games. As RedBaron would say, pull up a comfy chair and
hang around the campfire with us, when you have free time.

Hey there! Ok, for Quake 1, unsure if this is still needed or not, Data had mentioned it to me some time ago, but I know if you are behind a router/firewall, where you have an exteral WAN IP and internal LAN IP, it can cause problems for connecting to Quake 1 servers. There's a small executable or something I swear that fixes this.

KD, yup, server still up and running, and have been keeping things up to date as best I can. TF2, Quake 2 Lithium, CS:S Gun Game and CS:S. CoD as well still I believe running on it.

Quake 1 ready I think, SCTF at least, but I think there's a reason we don't run it?

Not sure why it wouldn't be running considering how little resources it uses.

And Neo, I have no idea how to find servers via Steam. That was more of an assumption than anything else.

If you have multiple network interfaces (wireless, wired, vpn, etc...) disable the ones not in use. There's a way to focus Quake to a specific adapter, but the command-line argument escapes me right now. When Quake was written dial-up was the thing and only fancy high-dollar servers used Ethernet! You were bleeding edge if you leaped ahead and got an ISDN connection. Eventually DSL came out, giving a reason beyond LAN parties to have an ethernet card in your computer and iD software was working towards Q3 by then.

You connect to the server's this way:
Press the "~" key to bring the Console down.
type: connect quake.sctf.net
then press enter.
It should connect.

If you're server's using a non-default port, like the last one in your list, you have to connect like so:
Press the "~" key to bring the Console down.
type: port 26004
type: connect xmd.quake1.net
(But, this server didn't connect for me. It might be down.)
then press enter.
Note: You'll have to switch back to port 26000 if you want to connect to a server on the standard port! It's not automatic. If you close Quake and start it over, it will revert back to the default port however.

Wasn't there some issue with having Quake running on the desktop? Someone was spawning a second console sessions on the server on an RDP terminal when the Console had a session running too. And the two Quakes canceled each other.
