Apparently it can be done with a run of the mill digital camera, with the gigapan unit they sell on their website. I'd love to take this thing on a hike, but it looks pretty heavy.

I see places where they've stitched multiple pictures into this pan. But the overall effect is amazing. I'm sure the major players each have their own software to address stitching multiple images into a single image such as this.

I haven't played with it yet, but Microsoft has ICE: http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/ ... s/ivm/ICE/

If your interested in the effect, give it a try. I'd bet that next hike would have some breathtaking views for you to capture.

Photoshop CS3+ stiches images also... And it's not hard to take them without a big Gigapan device.
In fact, you can take these hand-held a lot easier than you'd think.

One thing that I do when I'm shooting a panorama is I put my camera in manual mode and set the exposure value manually. This way you don't end up with the camera picking and choosing your exposure value between frames. That keeps your panorama at a consistent light level and makes it much harder to see where the stitches are.

Maybe I need to do one of my next tutorial blog posts on that! Hmm
