making a dvd

Post by Ender[CotC] »

I recently captured some footage (a whole lot of footage) of yoga for a film for a friend of the family. I captured it on a Panasonic DV which records onto minidv tapes and captured and edited it in final cut pro. Unbeknownst to me, the final cut of the video was 13Gb. That is not nearly small enough to fit onto a dvd that isn't chisled from magical materials by the mighty dwarves of middle earth. On top of this, the file is an MOV which cannot be burned onto a dvd to be readable on a dvd player. I was wondering if any of you knew how to:
a) convert file types free of charge
b) reduce the size of a video file from final cut without hampering its ability to be burned onto a dvd to be readable by a dvd player
c) know of a professional place irl that would do this for me
and d) somehow teach Ender the ways of the force

If anyone can help, I would be forever indebted to you and would consider servitude under your benevolence for the remainder of my natural life.
but seriously, help?

If you need me to elaborate on anything please let me know.

Download VirtualDub and try that. If you don't get how to use the program, just download it and get it working first, then I can help you with it when I get back home.

Death said to seek out the white wizARD, and you are neither of those things. :P

However, the real white wizard told me to drop the file into iDVD and compress it that way. too bad i don't have a mac. ^~^

I'll keep the VirtualDub option open if i can't find a mac in time, i think i might need to buy dual disks, the ones that are two sided..... or something. Is that something you can buy at a local best buy/circuit city/good guys (though that last one may not exist anymore)?

Dual Layer burnable DVD disks have a top label side, a center recordable side and a bottom recordable side. It's like one of those pictures that, when you change the angle, change to a different image. The cardboard backing is the label, and you can see the different images based on the angle your hold it to light. Well, your laser changes angles to see the center layer. And you'll always insert the disk label side up (like usual). DVD-R formats are usually more compatible with stand-alone DVD players (the kind you hook up to a TV.) So you'll probably be looking for some "8.4 GB DVD-R DL" blank media when you go hunting.

Get a free trial of Corel, and see if you can use that to convert your MOV into a MPEG file. DVD Copy 6 should be a good pick for this need. http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite/ ... 2796555406

Hey, thanks everyone.

Got a ma computer from a friend and got a hold of iDVD which helped in the compression and burning of the dvd. Got it down to 1.35 Gb without losing too much quality. just trying to get it successfully onto dvd now.... kinda frustrating.

I wish now that i had gotten a mac instead of a pc.

So you found out that "Mac" stands for "Make Another Choice"! Good for you! :)

Best thing on a Mac, is that they're easy to use. Worst thing - when it goes wrong the documentation sucks and the support community usually recommend reinstalling as a fix. Don't get me started on being forced to purchase a new OS patch each year to get all the bug fixes and new features.

At least with PC's problems can be traced back to a DLL conflict or Registry key, but someone documented it somewhere.
