Defragmenting

So i was under the impression that this would help my computer run faster/better.....harder/stronger

But i remember someone telling me that the defragmenter that come on the computer is a wet pile of crap and that i should use something else. I just can't remember what that other thing was. Is there a special defragmenter that should get online or something?

Windows defragmenter works, otherwise you can use a third party utility to do it, like Diskeeper, or Norton disk utilities.
The third party ones tend do do more optimization than the windows one, but either way, they'll all work.

I was used to Norton defreagmenter or something. It would show progress and stuff. The one im running now just has a window up with the vista loading bar that says "Defragmenting Disk, this could take a few minutes to a few hours."

Can't tell if it's actually doing anything.

For the most part Windows XP SP2 and above run a periodic maintenance on X number of boot-ups to enhance the computer's start times. This does a pretty good job of keeping the important Windows files on the fast track of your hard drive.

If you notice programs taking longer to load or removed a few gigs of unused programs, then Defrag may help some. File fragmentation isn't as noticeable since drives have become so quick and have lightning fast seek times. In the end, you spend hours defragmenting to shave a few fractions of a second from the load times for a few lucky programs. It's something I still do, but only once a year after house keeping on my disk drive. That's only if I'm too lazy to do a full format and reinstall.
