Elder Scrolls - Oblivion

Post by Neophyte »

Any tips for making cash?

So I've made a little Wood Elf, good at sneaking, some magic and speed. I've raised my rank at the Arena from Pit Dog to Brawler. I've closed the Oblivion gate outside Kvatch and got a horse and a membership with the Blades out of the deal. And even bought a house outside the city.

I've tried swiming around to find some Pearls. There doesn't seem to be many.

And I'm horribly stuck without any lock picks! I either need assistance with promoting my Alteration skills so I can use Magic to unlock chests or I need to find someone who sells lockpicks.

Marathon runners unite!

Post by Ender[CotC] »

FREAKIN' LUCKY!!!!!

If i wasn't poor, i'd have an xbox 360 and oblivion (or the PC version if my comp didn't suck), and.... a ton-o-cash..
 *pout*

I could go crying for hours about how i wish i could buy oblivion, but then everyone would hate me for "spamming" them with my pitiful wails.

So, anyways, Is the game good? all i've read is reviews and all i've seen is the E3 demo version. So, straight from some one who has played the game, is it any good?

The whole "you can have a horse" thing looks really cool. In the Elder scrolls for x-box (not 360) your character had to be a freaking marathon runner to get anywhere in the game. Or you had to stop and rest for a really long time.

I don't know if you've played the one for x-box (not 360), but if you have, how does it compare to Oblivion?

I've done well just popping into the various caves and tombs around the world. The monsters in the games scale to your own level when you enter the dungeons. The higher the level you are, the higher the level they are, and the better stuff they'll have for you to take and sell.

Right now my mage is level 12 and the skeletons I'm fighting are dropping some magical swords and stuff that are worth over 3000gold hehe. I have my black horse too, vrooooooooom.

grrrrr!!! everyone has it but me!!!!

Im only playing Elder scrolls 3!!! i can pick locks like no other.

Something that might help you guys in Oblivion is Alchemy.

Plants are ver abundant and you can always make something out of the plants around you (even if the potions suck) and sell them to your local vendor.

You can make a ton of money and have lots of healing potions at the same time. Sometimes it's hard to get the proper ingrediants, but it's really helpfull in the long run.

Just reinstalled windows... So I had to start over =X

My level two character has around 3000 gold.

As a rough estimate I'd say half came from betting on The Arena and the other half from alchemy stuff. At any given time I have twice as many alchemy ingredients in weight as I have heavy armor ;) Packrat syndrome + min/max leveler tendencies.

Remember to use quicksave before you bet on the arena for the times when you lose. ("Go Blue Team! Yeah Blue Team!...")

There are, of course, a lot of other ways to make money. I'm sure. I simply haven't found 'em yet!

Oh, and lockpicks? If you join the thieves guild your fences will have 100 lockpicks to sell you at about any given time... However, if you haven't figured out how to join the Thieves Guild yet, you might try the blacksmiths and general goods vendors. I don't frequent blacksmiths in the game very often, but I know that the one in Skingrad sold me a bunch of lockpicks one time =)

Now... I'm going to go finish up The Arena quests and become the Champion before I hit level three. Ciao~

Actually, now that I'm keeping an eye out for lockpicks on merchant inventories outside the Thieves Guild I'm finding that they're not as common as I thought. Sometimes these blacksmith merchants have lockpicks, but more often than not they do not. Just keep an eye out for merchants that have them if you don't intend to do the Thieves Guild (remember that their inventory is random for the most part).

I just started the quick save trick. I'm using it to conserve lock picks too!

I just joined the Thief's Guild. But, guess what? Soon after I woke up and was turned into a Vampire!!! Wjat?!?!

I finally resorted to a little cheating to get things faster. Sad, but true. I know, I suck. I used some console commands to get a new set of armor from head to toe and a sword to boot. (I still break all that stuff while rooting around in caves though.) And I wrote some new spells with the Oblivion construction set. I just couldn't stand waiting 10 minutes in cave. It's like a commercial interruption of me staring at a stalagmite. On each turn of the caves I would have to cast a dozen tiny health restores just to be whacked back to an inch of life on the next turn. I always seem to pick a loser of a character. Next time I'll pick a brute, someone who can take some punishment from blunt weapons. But my Wood Elf Assassin is now getting things done! w00t!

There is a better heal spell you can buy from the mages guild that heals more per cast heh.

Oh and the vampire thing.. if you're fighting a Vampire it may randomly infect you with.. some long ass name for a disease. If you don't cure it (with a potion/spell or visiting a church thing) you will eventually become one yourself 8)

I have the heal major damage spell. Or, as I like to call it, use major magna. It moves my health bar about 8x more than what a minor heal does. Not too bad! But I can only use one shot, because my magic stores don't have enough reserve to give me two shots yet.

For the vampirism, I did finish a quest to kill. (Sinbad, or Smegma, what ever his name was in the Imperial City.) He was the guy who killing "vampires" in the city and claiming that he was NOT a vampire when he indeed was. Sheesh! A day or two game time I got bitten while I slept. I tried the Church in the Imperial Temple, but that's when they sent me on a quest to see the count in Skingrad and he sent me to some old woman in the mountains near Bruma. She made me fetch 4 grand soul gems. I had to go diving through the mines to find them. And that wasn't easy. When I gave them to her, she made me get some list of like 4 ingredients, which one of which would require me to kill some un-killable Vampire locked in a cave... I tried to finish that quest, but by then the Vampirism set in too deep and I melted in the sun. Just fell right off my horse dead! Heh! Stupid Vampires allergies to the sun! So I cheated, and now I'm human again. I'll finish the quest sometime. Looked interesting. But moving around in those mountains was difficult because they were like 60 degrees steep slopes.

Becoming a Vampire is unrelated to the thief guild quest line, so don't be afraid to go out there and take everything that isn't inside your Skingrad House... and put it into your Skingrad house <3

just go into sneak mode and get real close and your cursor changes to pick-pocket?

Is the PC version different?

The implementation sounds the same Baron... But everyone I sneak up to has the red hand. I can only get away with pick pocketing when the cursor has a white hand. If I pick pocket with a red hand, the next thing I hear is "Stop right there criminal scum!" It seems like everyone I sneak up to in the cities know I'm all ready there so I can't loot them!

I'm thinking about trying this out in the caves. My sneak skills are now exceptional and I can sometimes approach from the front at full speed. Chameleon helps with that alot, and I suppose the intelligence of the creature. Perhaps I can grab someone's sword before I start attacking! I was just sneaking to get the 6X damage bonus before... Then I learned about the pick pocketing!
