it's pretty much what it says, a "modern QuakeWorld" client.
QuakeWorld is different than old school ice skating quake. That was when they started adding client prediction to it.

I thought what we were using was WinQuake, but it's been so long that I can't even remember anymore.

12 more days and I hit 30... Gah!

WinQuake had a problem detecting clients behind firewalls. It would only allow one client behind a typical home firewall to connect. Cefzil and Trinity (was that his girlfiend's screen name?) couldn't connect to the same server until we switched to ProQuake on the server. ProQuake is what gave us that modern network support beyond what iD software had intended to use when they released in 1996. WinQuake and GLQuake used iD's old code and doesn't like NAT/Firewalls. WQPro and GLPro (especially) are the preferred Quake client/servers now.

Rooster - we had some early development under QuakeWorld for our projects, but it wasn't a hit like the less optimized/TCP confused Quake was. Missing were the 3 axis of movement and particle effects. Turns out that flying and eye candy was important to this bunch! QuakeWorld is kind of a test in the early network code that became Quake 2 and Half-Life - which went a whole lot further to smooth out lag sensed over an internet connection.

Well, if all goes well, I should be proposing to my girl on my birthday... kids will come eventually

This would be wife #2. Let's hope that the second time is the charm!
