Portable hard drive

Sorry to be flooding the forum with topics.
I'm pretty much required to get a portable hard drive this year for my film classes, and was wondering what type you recommend.
There is a way to get a 300GB+ hard drive from the campus store, but it's around 100 dollars and it's a WD (Western Digital) "My Book" or something. I know some of the history behind WD devices and actually had the pleasure (very facetious there) of working with a neighbor's over the summer which inexplicably pissed itself and died.
The only reason i bring this up, rather than all the different types at a electronics retailer, is that i am without a mode of transportation that isn't powered by the use of my feet and legs in a manner comparable to exercise. Not that i'm lazy mind you, it's just 20 or 30 miles to the nearest best buy and i'm trying to be realistic. But if you suggest that WD is crap and that i should hightail it to my nearest electronics retail store i can pull a GTA or wrangle some sort of transportation to get there. I was just wondering what your thought's were on hard drives.... because this WD is starting to temp me as the easy way out.
