upgrade question - fast dark quake2

Quake2 is very dark. I used to be able to adjust the nvidia gamma setting,
but this box has IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 which supports
opengl, but the desktop gamma settings don't seem to have any effect in
the game. Do I need to buy a graphics card or can I fix this?

When I run a quake2 local server, the player moves much too fast.
Can I slow it down?

That was a vista 64 box. Switched to vista 32 with
onboard nvidia card, upgraded driver to latest version.
That gave me a opengl support and a gamma adjuster
to fix the darkness.
Turns out if I run a dedicated server, the speed is correct,
so both problems are now solved.

Odd, Vista 64 here, I don't believe Q2 ran/worked for me. Q1 doesn't, and surprisingly, Quake 4 doesn't either?!

I got Quake 3 to run, but that was after finding a "fix" to do so.

Vista Ultimate 64 here... Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX 768 - F'ing mismatch for Quake 1, but I ran Quake 1 with these settings: (No compatability settings, this is from the Run Command)
C:\Quake\glpro.exe -conwidth 1024 -width 1024 -gamma 0.8 -heapsize 65536

(GLPro is available from here.)

Edit: Quake: Timedemo demo1 = 969 frames, 1.5 seconds, 651.5 FPS = F'ing mismatch.

I'll try Q2 in a bit. I didn't buy Q3 or Q4, but I have ET:QW - which I know works.
Edit: Just finished installing Quake 2, patched to 3.20. I had some problems with fullscreen not supporting 16:10 resolutions. I've replaced the Quake2.exe with a widescreen version and it's working now. Tried timedemo 1, then MAP DEMO1.DM2 = 689 frames, 1.3 seconds, 550.3 FPS

Thanks Neo! Quake 1 working now, setup as you mentioned. I ran demo, and only got 129 FPS? Two 9600GT in SLI.

I'll try to get Quake 2 installed again.

And yes, Quake 4, which is basically Doom 3, no idea. Starts and then just sits at a grey screen. I've Googled it, but no one really has a solid idea/fix.

LMAO!!!! Yeah, just a bit overkill for good ole' Quake!

Which drivers are you using Akira?

I'm guessing that Doom 3 / Quake 4 issue is more related to SLI than it is to Vista 64-bit. But it might share the blame some with bad 64-bit SLI drivers from Nvidia. I would venture a guess that a single 9600GT and Vista x64 would play the game fine. But I'm thinking that only because the game wasn't written for SLI and isn't smart enough to know how to use two cards.

I've only found one game that I couldn't install/play (Prey) in Vista x64. And that's only because the setup.exe was stupid. I eventually learned that the game was available on Steam and has Steam install it for me. That made Prey work just fine. Maybe there's something in there, a patch or something, that Steam can work out for you too?

Hmm, will try more things. Might be the SLI doing it, although SLI has been around since Voodoo 2!

I'm keeping my Nvidia drivers up to date, getting the latest whenever released. Just surprised that all of the Quake games (minus ETQW) needed to be fixed in some way to work, understandably for Q1 and 2, but 3 and 4 not making alot of sense for them not working.

Quake 2 working! I must not have tried installing it since new computer purchased. 707 FPS on timedemo! Whoa, overkill.

Game is very light, mind you I am using my saved autoexec.cfg from when the game first came out. :D

Vista 32 with Nvidia geforce 6150se
Quake1: 60.2 fps
Quake2: 60.1 fps

You're computer is set to use VSync. It's forcing the game engine to draw a frame at the the monitor's refresh rate (60 Hz). This is good for image clarity because vertical lines stay sharp and straight. But this isn't good for games because it limits the speed at which your GeForce card can draw at 60 frames per second. The result is a sluggish and unresponsive feel from the mouse as you look left to right but at the benefit of a slightly better looking picture.

You can play with the settings by right-clicking some blank area of your Desktop and selecting "NVIDIA Control Panel."

In the NVIDIA Control Panel; navigate to "3D Settings" then to "Manage 3D settings." Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Global Setting tab/window and find the "Vertical sync" option. Change this to "Force off" and click "Apply."

Now run your Timedemo again. Your rates should be much higher and more accurate of what your computer can do in terms of performance. Also try looking left to right real fast. (like your watching rockets fly by!) Your mouse should feel more responsive. Exit Quake and switch the setting back to "Use the 3D application setting." Now test again and see if the mouse feels sluggish and unresponsive. This setting is a user preference, there isn't a correct setting for it (toe-may-toe / toe-mah-toe) But most would recommend not to use VSync while in a fast paced game.

The mouse has been sluggish and unresponsive for years - I noticed
the difference immediately in quake2. The new fps is not that much
different:
quake2: 101
quake: 134
I just tried q2dm5 DM with about 10 other people.
Phone jacks appeared 3 or 4 times, so it is a tradeoff, but I
still won the level. Of course, someone said, "Bots!".
But overall the gameplay is much better now, Thanks!!

Wow, surprised Q2 servers still exist! lol
