With being able to keep up to date on patches and updates...I think getting them... (granted, I'd have to rebuy them, but that isn't too big a deal).. would be kinda cool..since I would also be able to toss out my cds/dvds, instead of trying to keep track of every single one of them, and also making sure they don't get scratched or something.
What do you all think of the idea of steam versus cds... in general, and also in regards to newer cool games like these from Activision?

Steam is nice when it works, and when youre having connection trouble and want to play its a pain in the ass.

fair enough... but what do you think of it in lieu of the million cds you could be stashing around somewhere...that you have to go through every time you want to play a game?

Company of Heroes doesnt require the CD to play
and most games dont require CD for the multiplayer side of them
so honestly i havent had to put a game CD in my computer in months other than to install hehe.

all of the battlefield games require a disk in the drive... well, up til they started selling the games on the EA downloader...but that isn't even steam in the first place... you know what i mean though... single player counterparts to say..games like.. CoD and Cod2 are awesome... and I just happen to think it's cool that I could buy them now and not need the disks anymore. hehe
Want 'em? lol

I prefer to buy games without the media.
Direct2drive is one such place that allows you to get games without the hassle of having to feed discs to your computer. And that goes for single player or mulit-player. I always check to see if they have the game before I buy from retail. It doesn't ever save me money, but it saves me the hassle of CD management.
Game Distributors have a consumer hostile approach to anti-copy/anti-use of their products. I hate having to buy a game on CD/DVD! I recently bought Star Wars Empire At War on CD (it wasn't available on Direct2Drive) and couldn't find a no-cd patch for the latest upgrade. I had to leave it at the retail version. Which means that I cannot play on-line multi-player but I can at least try out the single player half of the game. So, No-CD patches can be good, Alcohol 52% can be good, but game distributors are also getting good at blocking the no-cd patch and the use of Alcohol. I prefer a simplified route.

Thx tons....I'll chk out that direct2drive site... are the games downloaded there same as if you buy at a store and then get patches online? and how do you manage patches/updates to the game?

Yes, they're the same games that you get from the store. Sans the packaging, manual, and media. You simply download a compressed .exe file to install the game, and then use a special reg code that they email to you (or you can look it up from their web site.) But unlike Steam, you can only install it to one computer.
Since the game executables that you download do not come with CD check, and the ones at the store do, you will need to use Direct2Drive's patches for your games. They have a "patches" section linked from their main page.

You can have my box and all the crap in it, if you want. I can always nick Scion's copy if pigs should happen to fly and I want the box...
I don't like playing MMO games by myself, anyways...
