DVD Copy Protection

I was asked a question by someone today regarding a fundraiser at our school. They are a group that publishes and creates the yearbook for students. Their idea is to make a dvd containing video from the grad ceremony, prom, dinner, awards banquet, etc. and sell these to the students. Her concern is that kids will get together and buy one between a group of friends and just copy it and distribute it among friends. She was wondering if there was something that could be done to prevent this. Now back in the days when I used to 'back up' my games on cd just in case i lost the original, there were some cds that made this difficult/impossible to do. So I have some questions:
1.) Is this possible to do with DVD's? (I'm sure it is)
2.) Is this going to cost a lot of money?
3.) Is it a tedious/next to impossible task to do such a thing?
4.) Does anyone have any recommendations regarding a solution/program?
Thanks,
Mav

Wel Mav I searched for a good 30 min (if you can't find something on Google in that time...well)and did not find any evidence of such an item...but I do remember an episode of The ScreenSavers that was talking about that. I think that was 2 seasons back. try
http://www.g4techtv.com and see if you can find any thing there. I'll keep looking in the mean time.

I think the idea here is to market the DVD to the parents, not
the kids. It is usually the parents that put up the money for
this kind of thing. That way you make the sale before the kids have
a chance to copy it. And yes, you can count on a certain amount
of piracy, but not as much as you might think.
On another note, I have seen lots of different HS fundraisers,
and IMHO you can't beat the classics: band candy and carwashes

Encryption is what that the movie people pay alot of dough for, which is ultimately worthless when there's apps out there like DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter which are free to the world...
I'm with Data on this one... It's probably not worth putting the time and money into to trying to encrypt the data... instead they should just market it to the parents.

alright, thanks for the input.
the only problem with candy and carwashes is that you have to do so many of them to make any money. For example, when we sold lollipops at our school, we ordered 1000 and ended up selling 700, making .50 per pop, but the only problem was we had 300 left over. Eventually I ended up getting rid of them, but it took an extra year or so. Did the chocolate bars, but again, I had to time it right so that I didnt interfere with grad club that sold purdy's chocolates around easter and the band who sold chocolate bars/almonds in October. Then with the carwashes you have to call months in advance to book a gas station that will let you have a car wash there, and flip a coin to see what the weather will be like that day.
People are always trying to come up with new ways to fundraise money. I personally like our fundraisers that we do for basketball. We do 2 fundraisers and that is it. We sell coupon books, and we run a youth basketball program before our season actually begins. Between the two of those, we make around 10,000.

Mav,
Here's anothe idea for a school fundraiser.
We have a reverse raffle every year. That is when your ticket is called, you are out, and the last ticket pulled wins. We charge $100 per ticket, includes free beer, wine and dinner. (one couple per ticket)
Normally sell about 300-350 tickets.
The prize is $5,000.
Throughout the night we sell chances to get back in, anywhere from $5 a chance to $20 a chance.
Drunk people spend lotsa cash.
We clear about $25,000.

Wow! Being involved with Scouting for over 10 years, we did all kinds of fund raisers, this tops it all. What kind of population base did you have to support this?
With our little town and surrounding population of around 10,000, I can't imagine this working.

wow that is a cool fundraiser. Not sure if it would be doable in this small community.
