map rotation on CS:S server

I know we all enjoy the community being built on the cs source server, and I'm just throwing this out as a suggestion. Very successful servers often have a routine selection of maps running all the time. The common ones we see on the CotC server are: Italy, Office, Dust, Aztec, Dust2, Rats, Awp Map. While these are all maps a lot of folks enjoy, I think the server might see more activity at all hours if we look at some pro examples.

http://forums.gameon.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13828

What I like here in this thread are all the maps that are normally played within competitive arenas for a number of reasons. Balanced buy zones, Even objectives, Overall Play ability, Overall Learn ability, and Commonly known. Not to mention, most are available directly without a single need to DL anything additional.

If something like this would be implemented on the CotC server, I think it would benefit in a couple ways: 1. Steady play on competitive maps only makes you better 2. Consistant rotations only promote quality members joining (members looking to get better at competition maps, ie. folks with league experience or seek improvement for league) 3. Map voting and Map complaints are often reduced, quality servers are harder to find these days - "fun map" servers are a dime0dozen. 4. Commonly used maps are usually tested and retested. New textures, sounds, map exploits, would not be issues for admins at any level, like they can be with new maps.

Just food for thought, if it were my choice you know where I'd take it... but I realize it's not, and for all I know, next week you will be running a 24/7 rats server. GL HF and enjoy the community.

oh and btw - if de_nuke ever gets released in a CS:S version, it's at the top of my list.

All those maps are in our map list, we use the voting system so its up to who is playing. The standard maps by far get the most play time anyway.

I listed the maps to which I can agree with your statement, however "standard maps" would not require any downloads. And as we can both see (well whenever stats come back up @ http://www.server.campquake.net ) that there are some great maps being missed: Train, Prodigy, Cobble to name a few. I'm not saying the vote system is broken, well yes I am - seems to me that the maps it offers as suggestions for vote are maps that people like to change it to. Which in some cases is good, when the maps are in the standard rotation. If you look at what you get to pick from normally, its usually something lame and you will almost always see AWP map. Why is that, on a usually AWPless server?

Anyhow, If you had a map rotation like:

Italy > Aztec > Train > Dust2 > Office > Prodigy > Cbble > Dust >

it might work - oh and look cs_ maps spaced evenly between de_ maps

hostie > bomb > bomb > bomb > hostie > bomb > bomb > bomb >

Red, I see where you are coming from and I'm not posting to cause an uproar, I was just sharing what seems to be a fair majority of desired maps throughout cs, and if you guys like having a server with nobody on it, thats up to you.

Statements like that one come across as arrogant and are not necessary or appreciated. If you feel the need to make suggestions that is fine, but our goals for the server do not necessarily match yours.

I guess my point is we don't mind suggestions but do mind being talked to like we're a bunch of newbies.

Is he wrong though? Seriously, I haven't seen too many people playing there at all recently.

Even myself, I've even decided that most time I'd rather play elsewhere than at our server, for reasons that I don't feel should be published on this public board.

Besides, I've said it all before and no-one has really taken any action to correct it.

If you have something to say, get it out so I can deal with whatever your problem is.

And you know exactly why the traffic decreased on the server and that's been addressed already.

Care to clue the rest of us in?

We had more traffic on the server prior to enabling all weapons - the experiment failed and I changed it back to 'No AWP" etc last week.
The traffic should pick back up now.

I also just changed the mapcycle.txt back to the standard maps - if people want another map on the server, they can put up a vote for it.

And btw: it will NEVER be a 24/7 Rats server..I hate that map.

This style of commentary is not necessary.

Hmm maybe I should clarify.

I'm a bit of a conservative when it comes to servers, I'm not a huge fan of mods nor do I really enjoy custom maps all that much. If it were up to me it'd be an office/italy server lol. Office is my all-time favourite.

The thing is there are people in CotC who DO enjoy mods and who DO enjoy custom maps, and we try to accommodate all of CotC the best we can.

Does the voting option need some tweaking? yes and we've talked about it recently. But I think the voting in itself is a good idea.

Anyway, I have no problem personally with anyone, I can disagree with words said without changing my view of the person saying them.

The server will continue to evolve and I'm sure , Sik, that your suggestions will be taken into account as it evolves.

A typical game server should have a map rotation of only the base/stock maps, with voting available to switch to a custom map.

There should really be no reason to do that any different.

I would tend to agree with that. Map rotation is a good thing, if a certain group of people are on the server and they want rats, let em have it, but vote it in!

I've thought about these words and I can see how that was taken by a number of individuals as a direct pointed finger or jab, this was not my intent, however I take full responsibility and apologize for the way it was brought forth.

Furthermore, I enjoy the server. It is not my goal to put it down, and if no changes are made I'd probably still play there. I was only putting in a suggestion that has helped other servers between peak times. I hope with the change back to "no AWP" you see the numbers rise. GL

Sorry that it came off arrogant, not my goal or motive.

happy fragging, good luck have fun.
