UoM in Ann Arbor? You'd be down the street! Well..almost.

That'd be the one... just how far down the street we talkin here?

If R.I.T. is in upstate NY, then I'd go there.

I have heard great things about UoR from colleagues of mine.

UoR is next door, but not one I chose to apply to. RIT is in Rochester, which is upstate New York

A little under an hour down the street, I'm in Toledo. Ohio State rules, by the way.

Yup, probably. Hehe...the highway to Ann Arbor goes right past my house, actually. Only been up there a hanful of times, but it's a gorgeous city. Except for all the University of Michigan banners everywhere...they're the enemy, you know.

I think we used interstate highway 90, is that one near you?

Yeah, that's the turnpike. From there it's 23 north until you hit Ann Arbor. I'm kind of on the corner of the two, where you turn on 23 and head north. Or something like that...<L>

Some of my friends went to RIT. At that time it was big on photographic
arts; I think Kodak adopted the school years ago. I guess it was a
good school, the people and parties certainly were. A lot of deaf students
into photography too; they were independent, a whole other culture that
did not want to be patronized, but cool people nonetheless IMHO.

Well, I am an RIT graduate. My degree is in Computer Science, I went for Systems Software Science, which is writing Operating Systems, Compilers, Interpreters, Device Drivers and the like. Minored in Math. Graduated 1983 (Some of you prolly weren't born yet!)

Although, I haven't earned a dime writing compliers and operating systems, as I went into the business end of computing, I can tell you that personally, the school, with it's co-op program was really good for my career.

I'm currently VP of IT for my company. (Actually, demoted to IT Director recently due to being acquired by a mega-giant company, bigger pond, smaller fish, you know). Financially, I don't believe I could have made out better, I am very fortunate, indeed. I have, however, worked my ass off, and 60 hour weeks are normal, and I still am at the whim of being fired by some troglydyte at a moments notice.

Another great thing about RIT is the wide variety of programs offered there, . Lot's of technical stuff, Photo Science, Pro Photo, Printing, Math, Physics, Comp Sci, and non technical stuff like Art, metal crafting etc.

One of my most favorite classes was Psycholgy of Human Sexuality, made a field trip to a porno movie theater!

Also had fun courses like Psychology of Altered States of Consciousness, where we learned to do self hypnosis, biofeedback devices and sensory deprivation effects.

So to wrap it up for you, I give you my pluses and minues for RIT.

Pluses:
Great school, excellent curriculum, great professors, nice campus.
Co-Op program gets you exeperience.

Minuses:
It is freakin cold and snows like crazy in the winter.
Since it is a technical school, the male-female ratio is not in your favor.
There is some mitigating factors to this in that there are several local schools that have the exact opposite problem, Ie Geneseo, and Nazareth where great hunting grounds.
Co-Op makes for a 5 year program.

I can't comment too much on your career choice these days. With talk of outsourcing IT overseas, it might make more sense to Major in Comp Sci and Minor in Hindi. I feel there will be a big call for US people to manage outsourced resources in the very near future.

The program I'm trying to do involves something to do with computer science and game development/creation. But judging from today's games and the credits that scroll at the end of each one, I'll need to double major in comp. sci. and Japanese just to fit in...
