I also have a level 17 blood elf priest (Datahjalpare).
Will advance via instances, not solo. The
whole purpose of this toon will be to keep the
group alive, not to attack mobs. Not sure if discipline
or holy is the better talent tree, or which talents to select.
Have plenty of gold to undo any mistakes. Any suggestions?

some thoughts from an 80 healing priest......
Grats! IMO, being an effective healer is the toughest role in the game.
GEar (I realize you are 17, so the gear you are wearing is what is available. But as you level...)
INT INT INT... you are a mana whore. No mana = no heals = bad
Eventually you want Spellpower, INT, Crit, haste, and Spirit.
MP5 isn't as useful as spirit since you'll be outside of the 5 second rule a lot. But take what you can get.
Stamina isn't as necessary since you are instancing.
Hit is useless for you
If you are taking any spell damage stuff (unnecessary) you cast holy and shadow damage.
Talents:
YMMV, but since you are only heals, something like this may work...
HOLY---
now
level 20
DISC--
now
level 20
More to follow once I have access to my priest.
Glyphs: (these depend on your spec)
you have a major/minor right now. I suggest:
Major: Power Word: Shield - free heal
Minor: Fading - reduces threat
30:
Major - Flash heal
50:
Minor - LEvitate
70:
Minor - whatever
80:
Major - Depends on final spec
General Healing:
Healing causes threat. If you've ever seen the tank rush in, and all but one mob run for the healer, it's because the tank didn't get enough threat before the healer critted his bomb-ass-heal. It's a good idea to wait for the consecrate, roar/swipe, or stomp thing (whatever warriors do) (depending on class) before you drop the heal.
I always keep a renew on the tank. Wait till they get aggro then pop a renew or start a bigger heal followed by a renew depending on how bad their gear is. All dps'ers have a threat mitigation tool (like feign death) at a certain level. If they don't use it, sucks to be them. I'll keep a renew on them as needed but until you are more mana friendly, the tank is your ONLY real concern.
LAter you'll get things like PoM which is AWESOME, CoH is good but expensive now, PoH is good too.
On my priest it's usually bubble and PoM pre-pull, then renew and either PoM again, FH/GH depending, or PoH. It's easy money but you will be a mana whore.
This is from memory so prolly wrong. GL!

Got the glyphs and restarted the build tree. Thanks!
Trying to split my time alternately leveling hunter and priest.
This helped me learn a lot more about team dynamics than
just using 1 character. Don't know if I will ever learn my way
through an instance from one end to the other though.
Ironically, one of the first things I learned as a priest
was that if you have to let one of the team die, you can
most easily do without the hunter

After playing all of the roles for a while, I've learned that the Hunter is usually the biggest annoyance, followed by the mage. When you are still buffing and the hunter is 'gogogogogo' I know the hunter will die.
Rogues are inadvertent annoyances because they think they are the invisible man, get 5 mobs deep then get knocked out of stealth.
But the first 2 get their threat dropping tool at 30. So if the mage doesn't block and the hunter doesn't feign, I usually tell them to get OMEN (its a mod) and watch their threat o prepare for a large repair bill because I will heal them less, or avoid pulling the mobs off of them.
The rogue get's vanish at 22 and priests get fade at 8 so there's no excuse there and I've seldom ever had a rogue intentionally pull and only had a priest do it once (the healer lol)
Warlocks are a little different as they have nothing to drop threat except talents and having their pet pull a mob off of them. They are never really a problem as their health is usually around half and they can't play it stupid or they die. hehe.
All of the other DPS classes are tough enough to survive for a bit.

Well I have learned that when the priest gets killed, don't say "sorry I got killed".
Better to say, "Hey why did you let your healer die?!?!"
Is it worth getting a non-class mount, or is it a lot of effort better spent in
leveling? I would like to ride something other than lizards and chickens.

You can't until you are exalted with the other factions. Just level for now and you can easily get all of them at 80 doing dailies for fun and profit.

it looks like you have 2 unspent points... this is what I would do, but feel free to disregard...
('TA' = throw away point. You can put this wherever but you need it to progress...)
Holy tree
2 points into Holy Specialization will bring you to 26
27 5/5 Holy Specialization
28 1/2 Healing Focus (TA but might get that heal off)
29 1/1 Desperate prayer (TA but useful, very expensive 'OH SHIT' button)
30 1/3 Improved healing
31 2/3 ""
32 3/3 ""
33 1/2 Holy Reach
34 2/2 ""
35 1/1 Spirit of Redemption (yay angels)
36 1/5 Spiritual Guidance
37 2/5 ""
38 3/5 ""
39 4/5 ""
40 1/5 Spiritual Healing
41 2/5 ""
42 3/5 ""
43 4/5 ""
44 5/5 ""
45 5/5 Spiritual Guidance
46 1/2 Surge of Light
47 2/2 ""
48 1/2 Healing Prayers (useful later)
49 2/2 ""
50 1/3 Serendipity
51 2/3 ""
52 3/3 ""
53 1/5 Empowered Healing
54 2/5 ""
55 1/3 Empowered Renew
56 2/3 ""
57 3/3 ""
58 1/1 Circle of Healing
59 3/5 Empowered Healing
60 1/5 Divine Providence
61 2/5 ""
62 3/5 ""
63 4/5 ""
64 5/5 "'
Here you can take 1/1 Guardian spirit int he holy tree, then continue or pick it up later like this (adjust the levels accordingly)
DISC tree
65 1/2 Improved PW: Fort
66 2/2 ""
67 1/3 Silent Resolve
68 2/3 ""
69 3/3 ""

71 1/3 Meditation
72 2/3 ""
73 3/3 ""
74 1/3 Improved Inner Fire
75 2/3 ""
76 3/3 ""
If you are hurting for mana, you can do
DISC TREE
3 pts in Mental agility which will reduce the cost of your Renew, CoH and PoM
If not
Holy TREE
77 3/5 Empowered Healing
78 4/5 ""
79 5/5 ""
80 1/1 Guardian Spirit until you respec for heroics

Thanks I will do that!
So far I have run instances with no macros. Well, I wrote one today
that says 'oom'. Occasionally I do things like inadvertently heal myself.
or forget to put focus back on the tank after healing a dps.
If you happen to have any useful priest macros, I would like to try them out...

This allows an insta bubble on yourself without losing your target
/cast [target=player]Power Word: Shield
This one announces that you are resurrecting a player. useful in raids where you have several people doing it but handy none the less
/s rezzin™ %t
/cast Resurrection
This yells when you see a flagged person and gives their coords
/script x,y=GetPlayerMapPosition("player")s=" "t="target";SendChatMessage("ENEMY PVP "..UnitLevel(t)..s..UnitClass(t)..s..UnitPVPName(t)..s.."("..floor(x*100+.5)..","..floor(y*100+.5)..")","yell")

After one month:
Hunter: 46 (increased 20 levels)
Priest: 34 (from start)
Paladin: 11 (from start)
Playing time: about 100 hrs.
