Building a new PC

Post by Crappy Pants »

I am looking to upgrade my system, but need advice again.

I believe I want an overclocked i7 system
Nvidia 1-2 Gig graphics card with HDMI and analog outputs
1-2TB hard drive
Card readers
Other stuff I'm sure

I can put the thing together I'm sure, but probably also want some bundle/bare bones kit that include Windows 7 OS.

Are these specs right/wrong and where to start for getting the best bang for the buck, approximately 1K to spend with plenty of old parts to put into the new machine - also would like to have a flashy case but not important.

TIA.

I have the i7 2600k and its great. A Nvidia GTX 560 or higher card would kick some butt. If you want great bang for your buck go with a GTX 560 card. Hard drives have dropped in price a lot but QC sucks. Be prepared to get a noisey HDD or have it fail after a short time. Card reader your on your own I don't use them but a lot of printers now include them. Asus or EVGA would be IMO the best for your MB. Both are great for overclocking even when you don't know what your doing. Asus will give you more options when it comes to pricing and deciding on on-board features.

If you are ok maybe with a regular SATA hard drive for storage space (ie. 1Tb or more), I'd suggest an SSD drive for the OS drive at least. I'm running an 80Gb SSD drive, Windows 7 on it, and most installed programs (Half Life 2 being most important). Only about 7Gb left. Larger SSD drives are more affordable now though.

I had two GeForce 9600GT running SLI, but now upgraded to two AMD/ATI Radeon HD 6850 running Crossfire. Still using my Quad Core Q6600 and 8Gb RAM. I know Core i7 has more CPUs, and is newer chip, but I swear I've compared using things on an i5-i7 processor (including the Windows Experience) to my Q6600, and I swear to God my machine/CPU is faster and better performing.

Basically, for gaming, concentrate on video cards and an SSD drive at least, plus RAM.

I have an i7 2600k and it is great. As far as the graphics card i would get a nvidia with 2gb or more. The ram on the g-cards is becoming more and more utilized. As for MB i have used MSI, ASUS, EVGA. All preform well but MSI have always given me the least trouble and lasted longest. I have a 1TB HDD for my main drive and a 4TB for a second drive where I have steam installed with my huge library.
