BTW, if my computer says it has a 8x DVD-R/RW drive... will it still handle that max CD-R speed (something like 36x or something?)?

It could be slower CD-R speed. Depends on the drive.
I'm sure there's specs someplace that'll tell you exactly what it does.

Most are 52X, but occasionally I still see some that are as slow as 32x

Meh, who cares about the CD speed! 1X is all you need for music... For anything else, it just means your installs take a few seconds longer.

But the Windows Media Player is out of date! I'd take it back and tell them that it's garbage! Or you can just give it to me. When they start shipping with the Media Player 11 update, you can buy that one! :)

I had the GEN1 of those (with the skullz) shipped to me when I was deploying in 2004. Still using it as my main system. In about 3-4 months I'll get new guts for my desktop and migrate off of this, but it's still a screamer. I am using PCCard SB audigy and it's nice.

Only problems I have found are the Dellware which I fixed immediately, the Combo drive went out 3 months into owning it and the battery (which I used 3 times) maxes out at 45% now... just a heads up.
