Try not to confuse "great" with exceedingly good. Not as in "this pizza tastes great!" but as in "this painting is a great work of art." Think of it more as the meaning of significant or of major importance.Wingwhiper said:

Vietnam didn't have strong backing by the citizens. However WWII did. So Vietnam wasn't considered a great war because it's reasons were not widely approved of. However WWII had good reason to be fought out.
Dyeing to keep a tyrant from taking over is a worthy cause. Keep it in perspective though. More Americans die from taking aspirin (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) than all of the Allied forces combined in the Iraq war. (7,600 vs. 2,500)
