Try not to confuse "great" with exceedingly good. Not as in "this pizza tastes great!" but as in "this painting is a great work of art." Think of it more as the meaning of significant or of major importance.

Vietnam didn't have strong backing by the citizens. However WWII did. So Vietnam wasn't considered a great war because it's reasons were not widely approved of. However WWII had good reason to be fought out.

Dyeing to keep a tyrant from taking over is a worthy cause. Keep it in perspective though. More Americans die from taking aspirin (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) than all of the Allied forces combined in the Iraq war. (7,600 vs. 2,500)
